They seek to charge tens of thousands of dollars for custom website construction and maintenence. While the benefits of custom websites are clear, their exorbantent prices often prohibit small business owners, health professionals in private practices, smaller law and account firms, and private organizations from being able to afford them.

Cookie Cutters - These web firms offer template sites at a lower cost that are geared towards groups with smaller marketing budgets. While the low price is enticing, the lack of customization and generic feel of these sites often leave their customers with a less than optimal marketing tool. Imagine a customer visitng your website only to find that it is nearly identical to a site that they just visited a few minutes ago. In marketing, presentation is everything, and a generic site often does not leave a positive impression.

Free-lancers - These are not really design firms, rather they are individuals who design custom websites at a price lower than the "corporate giants." While they often provide the personal attention which might not be available from larger firms, they are also notoriously unreliable. Without a reliable business entity, there is very little to hold these free-lancers to any standard of accountability. They often move, quit designing and take new jobs, or simply don't respond to your requests in a timely manner.
